If you just had a consult for hair color and cut shape, the most important rule is simple: don’t change the plan behind my back in the next 48 hours. That means no at-home color experiments, no surprise chemical services, and no skipping a patch test if I recommended one. In Hewlett, I see busy schedules all the time, but these small steps are what keep your follow-up appointment smooth and your result predictable.
Your first 24 to 48 hours: patch test, timing, and the 3 “don’ts”
48-hour priority: confirm your appointment details, complete any patch or strand test I recommended, and keep your hair and scalp “neutral” so your test read is accurate.
1) Confirm the follow-up appointment within 24 hours
I keep consults focused and practical so you can move right into the service you actually want, like highlights, Balayage, a corrective hair color, or a precision haircut. Within the first day, confirm your date and time, especially if you’re coordinating around the Hewlett LIRR station commute or family schedules in the Five Towns.
2) If I recommended a patch test, treat it like required
For many color services, a patch test is the safety check that keeps your appointment on track. If I set you up with one, do it exactly in the timeframe I gave you. Then leave the test area alone. Don’t scrub it, don’t apply perfume or heavy lotion over it, and don’t “retest” in a new spot unless you’ve spoken with me.
3) The three don’ts that save the most headaches
- Don’t book other chemical services between your consult and your appointment. That includes relaxers, perms, keratin work at another place, or box dye. It can change how your color lifts, grabs, or fades.
- Don’t deep-cleanse your scalp right before testing or color day unless I told you to. Harsh clarifiers and aggressive scrubbing can irritate the scalp and make everything feel more sensitive.
- Don’t bring surprise variables. If anything changes, like new medication, a scalp treatment, or a reaction to a product, let me know before you’re in the chair.
The first week: keep your plan intact (especially before color, highlights, or Balayage)
A good consultation isn’t just talk. It’s the blueprint. I’m listening for what you want, what your hair can realistically do, and what’s going to look right on you long after you leave the salon. A lot of clients tell me a great consult is the difference between “pretty good” and “that’s exactly what I wanted.” Keeping your week calm helps me deliver that.
Sweat, sun, and chlorine can throw off timing
If you’re doing a patch test, I generally recommend avoiding heavy sweating, strong sun, and chlorine for 24 to 48 hours unless I told you otherwise. In summer on the South Shore, humidity and sun exposure can also affect how your hair behaves leading up to the appointment, especially if you’re coming in for lightening.
Hold off on big changes at home
Avoid new oils, heavy masks, and random “repair” trends the week you’re coming in, unless we talked about them. Product buildup can make a toner grab unevenly, and certain oils can make it harder to get clean, even lift. If you’re itching to do something, text or call first. I’ll tell you what’s safe.
Products I like you to use (and avoid) before your service
I don’t want you guessing. Before most color or lightening appointments, clean hair and a calm scalp usually win. In the days after your consult, stick to a gentle shampoo and conditioner that don’t leave a waxy coating. If you use dry shampoo, keep it light and don’t layer it for days, because it can block the scalp and pack the roots.
Quick pre-appointment product rule
If it coats, stains, or heavily perfumes the scalp, skip it until after your service. If it cleans gently and rinses clean, it’s usually fine.
And if your plan includes a smoothing service later, like a Brazilian Blowout or another hair treatment, let me know before you do anything at home. Timing matters. The order of services can change the final look and longevity.
Bring these 4 things to your follow-up so I can nail the result
If you found me by searching “hair salon near me, ” you’re probably comparing a few places. This is one of the little differences that makes your appointment feel easy. I’m big on specifics, so I want you to show up with the information that actually helps.
- Inspo photos that match your real hair texture, not just a perfect studio shot. If you wear it curly and straight, bring both references.
- Your hair history for the past year, especially box dye, salon color, keratin, henna, or anything that changed the hair’s behavior.
- Your non-negotiables. For example: keep my length, cover my grays, stay low maintenance, or keep it office-friendly.
- Schedule reality. If you can only come in every few months, I’ll steer you toward color placement that grows out cleaner.
A lot of my regulars come in from Woodmere, Cedarhurst, Lawrence, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, and Valley Stream. If you’re juggling work and kids, evening slots near Station Plaza can be a lifesaver. Just ask me what’s available.
If something feels “off, ” reach out before your appointment
If you notice scalp irritation, an unexpected reaction to a patch test, or you suddenly remember that you used a chemical service recently, tell me right away. I’m not here to judge you. I’m here to protect your hair and make sure the plan we made in the consult still makes sense.
“Dimitri is wonderful. He’s always available whenever you need him.”

One more note for bridal consults in Hewlett: keep it clean and photo-ready
If your consultation was for bridal hairstyling, bring inspiration photos and be clear about your veil, dress neckline, and the vibe you want. For the wedding day, plan to arrive with clean, dry hair unless I tell you otherwise. That small detail makes styling hold better and keeps timing stress-free.
